New Members Information

This is some general information for the people who attended or were unable to attend the meeting on the basics of FIRST and Small Robotics.


FIRST robotics is the highest level of robotics at U of D.  This requires a large time commitment and as a team we prefer that you have experience in small robotics before joining FIRST.  If you have not done robotics before, please do small robotics this fall. Before the season starts you can receive information about joining FIRST in December.  FIRST has a diverse amount of activities you can help with. We have students who work on CAD, Programing, and Building.

Small robotics uses lego NXTs to build and program robots.  During the first semester students will work on Sumo Bots.  Then during second semester students will participate in Robofest.  Students will have the opportunity to participate in this year’s challenge or to build an exhibition robot.


FIRST: During the build season we would like all students to attend a build session at least twice a week. During build season, which runs roughly from January through March, we will meet every weekday after school until around 6pm. On Saturdays we will likely meet from 10am to 6pm.

Small Robotics: This meets once a week on Thursdays in Mrs. Wint’s room (Academy Science Lab S321) If you have not done robotics before and plan on doing FIRST this year, please try out small robotics to learn some of the basics.


FIRST provides a fun, competitive team experience, and teaches many skills that can help you throughout life. In FIRST you will learn how to use power tools and other important skills. FIRST encourages cooperation and competition with other schools. FIRST also is a great way to earn scholarships to colleges.

     Small Robotics is a great stepping stone to begin developing robotics skills.  It is fun and allows you to meet others with similar interests.

State Championship Results

The Robocubs performed well at the State Championship this weekend. Our robot, code, and driving continued to improve throughout the event and they closed out the event with three strong wins and outstanding performance from our robot. We are hopefully going to qualify for Worlds as we placed 33rd at the State Championship.

Robofest Competition Held

Today the University of Detroit Jesuit hosted a Robofest competition not only for our small robotics teams or our outreach teams (from Gesu, Christ the King, and Most Holy Trinity) but for teams in the community.  At this competition, there were 29 junior game teams, 2 senior exhibition teams, and 10 junior exhibition teams.  This competition is the largest the school has ever hosted! This year the school moved the competition to the gym so we would have more space for teams.  This worked out well and the competition stayed on schedule.  At the competition, the entire FIRST robotics team volunteered to help set up the competition, help out during the competition, and clean up when the competition was over.


Center Line District Final Results

After finishing qualifiers, we were seeded fifth but we ranked first or second in the unofficial but standard measures of Offensive Power, Defensive Power, and Calculated Contribution to Winning Margin. The tournament high score for a qualifying round was set by Mercy, and Waterford Kettering, and us.  

We ended up as captain of the 4th Alliance and picked 5053, the Lakers from OL of the Lakes in Waterford, and 2048, the Pink Panthers from the Detroit International Academy for Young Women.  In Quarterfinals, we easily defeated the 5th alliance, which left us against the 1st seed–a very strong Mercy team along with their alliance partners–in Semifinals.  In the most exciting round of the event, Mercy’s robot and one of our alliance robots ended up flipped over, but we ended up winning, followed by another close win to pull off the upset.

We lost the first Finals round against Waterford Kettering and their alliance partners and went into the second as the underdog.  Both teams performed incredibly well in the second round, racking up the highest combined score of the tournament and one of the highest in the world so far this season, but the Cubs emerged victorious by a single point, 145-144.

The final round was again very close with several things happening at the last second, but we won the round 140-113!

Tippecanoe, Indiana District Final Results

Over the weekend, the Robocubs took the long journey down to Tippecanoe, Indiana.  At this competition, we had instant success. We won our first match of the day and scored 4 ranking points!  Later that day we hit a rough patch, which brought our record to 3-5.  On Sunday, we were ready to win, and we won our remaining 4 matches, gaining 4 ranking points in each. Winning these matches allowed us to move up to 5th place.  We ended up being the Captain of the 3rd seed alliance, and we drafted teams 3940 and 3147 to our alliance.  We battled to siege the castle and won two quarterfinal matches allowing us to move on.  In the semifinals, we faced a strong alliance, but due to a red card on the other alliance in the 3rd match, we moved on.  In the finals, we were facing the #1 seeded alliance.  We lost the first match 137-117. We won the 2nd match, our strategy worked flawlessly and the other team didn’t weaken the tower.  In the third match, we had technical difficulties on two of our robots, and we lost the final battle.  This was great practice, and we hope to win at Center Line!

Southfield District Final Results

We finished the qualifying rounds 19th out of 39 teams!  In the quarterfinals, we were drafted by the 8th alliance, headed by the Livonia Warriors(2832), along with Knight Vision(3175).  We had a great strategy, but lost the first round by only 5 points (100-105).  After that round, we refined our strategy and scored an impressive 121 points, but this was not enough due to a last minute capture by alliance 1 bringing them to 138 points.  We plan to refine our robot as we prepare for our week two competition, Tippecanoe, in Indiana!  We hope to work with team 2832 and 3175 again in the future!
